How to Make Your Candle Last Longer: Our Candle Care Guide

How to Make Your Candle Last Longer: Our Candle Care Guide

There's nothing better than lighting your favourite candle after a long day and filling your home with a beautiful fragrance.

But are you getting the most from your candle?

With a little bit of care, you can help your candle burn more evenly, enjoy the fragrance for longer and get the most out of every candle.

Here are our favourite candle care tips.

1. Trim your wick before lighting

One of the simplest things you can do is trim the wick before each burn.

A long wick can create a larger flame and may produce more soot. Keeping the wick trimmed helps create a more controlled flame.

Always make sure the candle has cooled before trimming the wick.

2. Give your first burn enough time

The first burn is particularly important.

When you light your candle for the first time, allow the wax to melt across the surface as evenly as possible. This helps establish a good melt pool and can reduce the chance of the candle developing a tunnel down the middle.

Try not to extinguish the candle too quickly on its first burn.

3. Don't burn your candle for too long

While it can be tempting to leave a candle burning for hours, longer isn't always better.

Give your candle a break and allow the wax to cool before lighting it again.

As a general rule, always follow the specific burning and safety instructions supplied with your candle.

4. Keep your candle away from draughts

Where you place your candle can make a big difference.

Keep it away from open windows, fans and strong draughts. A moving flame can cause the candle to burn unevenly and can also cause the flame to become larger than you would like.

A stable, heat-resistant surface is the best place for your candle.

5. Never leave a burning candle unattended

This one is simple but important.

Always keep a burning candle within sight and away from children, pets, curtains and anything that could catch fire.

If you're leaving the room, extinguish your candle.

6. Don't burn every last bit of wax

Once you've reached the end of your candle's useful life, it's time to stop.

There should be a small amount of wax remaining at the bottom of the container. Continuing to burn beyond this point can cause the container to become excessively hot.

And this is where our sustainability story comes in.

What can you do with your empty candle jar?

One of the things we love about candles in glass containers is that the container can potentially have another life.

Once your candle has finished, you can clean the container and reuse it for small items around your home, depending on its shape and suitability.

And if you have a bottle or jar you'd like to turn into a candle in the future, our Custom Candle service gives you the opportunity to give a special container a completely new purpose.

Enjoy your candle slowly

A candle is there to be enjoyed.

Take a few minutes to light it, let the fragrance fill the room and enjoy the atmosphere it creates.

With a little care, you can get more enjoyment from your candle and help it burn as beautifully and evenly as possible.
